Description

Russian poet Mikhail Lermontov worked on the poem Demon throughout all his short life. It is considered a masterpiece of European Romantic poetry. It is a story about a fallen angel who is forced to spend his existence in hatred and loneliness until he spies the beautiful Tamara and falls in love with her. Neither can she resist his charm.

The work is created by director Viesturs Meikšāns has worked in close collaboration with set designer Monika Pormale and jazz trio Auziņš – Čudars – Arutyunyan, which perform live music by composer Matīss Čudars. The elements of acting, poetry, visuals and music in the performance merge in a close connection, looking for an answer to the question “What is a demon?” here and today. Performance has received the Liepāja Culture Award 2020.


Artist / Company biography

Liepāja Theatre was founded in 1907, and it is the oldest functioning Latvian theatre with more than a century-long history and almost uninterrupted activity, excluding relatively short disruptions during World War I and World War II. The theatre has always displayed a remarkable interest in musical productions, altering between drama and opera for decades; moreover, in this place the first Latvian musicals and rock operas were created. Liepāja Theatre is a repertoire theatre with a permanent cast of 31 actors and approximately 10 new productions/premieres per season, starting from the works of Latvian authors up to authors recognized all over the world. Each year Liepāja’s actors and performances are nominated for the Latvian Theatre Award Spēlmaņu nakts. Liepāja Theatre has also gained international recognition with several performances that have been shown in international theatre festivals such as TRANS/MISSIONS in Rzeszów, Poland (2021), TEART in Minsk, Belorussia (2014, 2017), Kontakt in Torun, Poland (2014), Wiener Festwochen in Vienna, Austria (2014), Golden Mask in Moscow, Russia (2011, 2013) and others.
